The Warriors became the first “northern” school to win the national golf title last spring when they defeated Central Alabama by four strokes in the four-day national tourney in Odessa, Texas.

Indian Hills edged Brevard (FL) CC by one point in the preseason poll, officially called the Golf World/Nike Golf NJCAA DI College Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The poll is a combined effort of Golf World magazine, Nike Golf and the Golf Coaches Association of America. The Warriors received three first-place votes to two each for Brevard and Central Alabama, who was third in the poll.

IHCC coach Mike Hagen admits the top ranking surprised him a little. “We lost Dan Dawson, Steven Ihm and Zach Steffen from our national championship team,” noted Hagen. “The voters must have felt that Jon Paul Blampied, who was our third scorer at the national tourney, and Monty Lack, our other returning sophomore, will be able to lead what we believe is a talented group of freshmen into the new season.”

“I’m excited to see how our young team responds,” added Hagen, who is beginning his seventh year as golf coach at Indian Hills.

The Warriors will open their fall schedule at the John A. Oct. 15-18.

Indian Hills won all five meets in which it played last fall and 11 of 13 meets in the fall and spring combined.

Warriors Rake in Postseason Honors

Ottumwa -- IHCC coach Mike Hagen and his top four golfers were all honored after the Warriors’ title-winning season.

Hagen was named the NJCAA National Coach of the Year and the GCAA Eaton/Golf Pride District III and National Coach of the Year.

Steven Ihm took home the Phil Mickelson Award as the best freshman golfer in the country. But the Warriors struggled a little as the winds increased and changed direction during the last 10 holes. Their seemingly comfortable lead had shrunk to four strokes going into the final hole, then three of the four IHCC golfers parred the hole to allow Indian Hills to validate their preseason No. 1 ranking and take the crown.

Two of the pars on the 18th hole were by Dan Dawson and Steven Ihm, who tied for 4th place overall.

Dawson was consistent during the tournament. His final-round two-over par 74 was his highest score, and it was four strokes better than any of his teammates over the last 18 holes.. The Southampton, England native opened with an even-par 72, followed with a two-under par 70 on Wednesday, and had matching 74s to close out the tournament.

After an even-par 72 to begin the tourney,Ihm, from Peosta, Iowa, had two straight under-par rounds -- a 71 on Wednesday and a three-under par 69 the next day -- before posting a 78 in the final round.

He still wound up with a 290 total, the same as Dawson, two over for the tourney and seven strokes behind the individual medalist, Brevard CC's William Anderson. Two players shot 287 and Dawson and Ihm were two of four players who finished at 290.

Jon Paul Blampied, an Indian Hills freshman from South Africa, tied for 17th place with a 294 total. He was three shots over par going into the last round, but finished with a 79 and a 294 total. That was one stroke better than classmate Zach Steffen, from Des Moines, who was one stroke under-par for the tourney after 54 holes before closing with an 80.

The Warriors were in 3rd place after the first day. They opened with a team score of 287, one-under par and one shot behind co-leaders Central Alabama and McLennan, the two-time defending national champ.

However, Indian Hills grabbed the lead early in the second round and never relinquished it.

The Warriors had a solid round of 289 on Wednesday, day two, and were at even-par 576 at the midpoint of the tourney, three shots better than McLennan.

A six-under par 282 in the third round enabled Indian Hills to put some distance between themselves and the field. That's the day that Ihm and Steffen shot 69s and Blampied had a 70 as IHCCs lead grew to 12 strokes going into the final day of play.

Central Alabama was second after three rounds and never could catch the Warriors.

The national crown is the second in golf for IHCC. Indian Hills won the NJCAA Division II title in 2000 and now has another championship 11 years later.

The win for Indian Hills came on the same course in Odessa where they had won the DI National Championship Preview last October. And it capped a year in which they finished first in 11 of the 13 tournaments they entered, including a perfect five-for-five in the fall.

And with three of the top four scores at the national tourney coming from freshmen, the future looks very bright for IHCC golf.

Team Results (top ten)

1. The Warriors trailed Frank Phillips College by three shots after the opening round on Thursday, then posted the lowest scores over the next two rounds to win by four strokes over Odessa CC. The Warriors' total of 865 was only one shot over par for the 54-hole tourney.

The first two rounds were played on Thursday and the Warriors entered the second day of the event leading Odessa by a single stroke. And IHCC coach Mike Hagen admitted he was nervous going into Friday. "We had a long day in the heat on Thursday and there was the added pressure of being the leader, as well as taking on Odessa in their own back yard."

Hagen added, "But we went out (Friday) and played really solid. I proud of the way the guys played. We struggled a litte on the greens and, had we done better there, we would have run away with it."

Jon Paul Blampied led the charge for IHCC. The freshman was the first-round leader after opening with a five-under par 67. He was still tied for the lead after two rounds, shooting a two-under 70 in Thursday's second round. Blampied followed with a final-round 70, but was edged for the individual title by New Mexico JC's Jordan McColl, whose third-round 69 gave him a total of 206, one shot better than Blampied.

Another Indian Hills freshman, Steven Ihm, gave the Warriors two top-ten finishers. Ihm tied for 9th place with a 217 total after rounds of 74, 70 and 73, one-over par for the tourney.

Zach Steffen, playing as an individual, was next for Indian Hills with a 221 total, tied for 24th place. Steffen's best round was an even-par 72 on Friday.

Dan Dawson was 35th with a 223. Dawson followed up two rounds of 75 on Thursday with a final-round 73. Teammate Monty Lack was right behind Dawson with a 225 and Cameron Munro rounded out the IHCC results with a 228.

Lack recovered after shooting an 81 in the first round with a three-under par 69 in the second round. Munro fired a 72 in the middle round for his best 18-hole score.

Indian Hills is tied for No. 1 in the national poll with Meridian CC, which didn't take part in the tournament. But after closing the third round in third place, the Warriors' hopes to at least contend for a national title were short-circuited when the fourth and final round, scheduled for Friday, was canceled because of bad weather.

The cancellation left the Warriors with their second third-place finish in three years. They were also 3rd in 2008 and 4th last year.

Friday's cancellation also prevented IHCC's Dan Dawson from going after the individual title. Dawson was tied for 2nd through three rounds, just two strokes off the pace of eventual medalist Brandt Garon of Meridian CC.

Dawson finished with a 213 total, three-under par on the Robert Trent Jones course. His best round of the tourney was a three-under 69 on Wednesday. That round was sandwiched between two even-par rounds of 72 for Dawson.

He was named to the All-Tournament 1st team and was also a 1st team All-American.

Justin Weber finished in a tie for 8th place after putting together rounds of 72, 72 and 73. Weber was awarded second-team All-Tournament honors and was an honorable mention All-American.

Cameron Munro gave Indian Hills another top-20 finisher. Munro was tied for 20th with a 220 total. He fired a two-under par 70 in the third round.

The other two Warriors who competed, Zach Monson and Kurt Slattery, tied for 30th place with 223 totals.

McLennan CC won the team title with an 860 total that included a meet-best 285 score on the third day. The field played just 18 holes on Monday instead of the 36 holes that were scheduled because of soggy conditions and slow play.

Indian Hills is just three shots behind the co-leaders, Brevard (FL) and McLennan (TX), after the Warriors shot an opening-round 292. Sophomore Justin Weber led IHCC with a three-under par 69, good for second place in the individual medalist chase. Teammate Zach Monson carded an even-par round of 72 and is in 10th place. McClennan's Juan Salcedo shot a four-under 68 to lead the pack after the first day.

IHCC will go into Tuesday's final round looking to improve on last year's seventh-place finish at the fall preview. And Warriors coach Mike Hagen is looking for good things for the final 18 holes. "We hung right in there with everybody (Monday)," Hagen said. "It's supposed to be pretty nice (Tuesday). The Warriors won with a 13-stroke margin over runnerup Hutchinson CC. IHCC finished the two-day, 54-hole tournament with a 942 total.

When the teams teed off on Tuesday morning, the temperature was in the low 40s and the winds were howling at 30 mph.

Despite the less-than-ideal conditions, Indian Hills sophomore Kurt Slattery had an impressive performance. Slattery carded an opening-round 74 and followed it up with rounds of 82 and 74 on Tuesday to claim meet medalist honors. IHCC coach Mike Hagen was amazed at the way Slattery played, saying, "Kurt played unbelievable. He really kept his head in it."

Slattery's score of 230 bested Dale Middleton of Hutchinson and Trevor Johanson of Johnson County by one stroke. The Warriors' Dan Dawson came in sixth with a 236 and teammate Cameron Monroe was seventh at 239.

Indian Hills will host Iowa Western in a dual meet at the Ottumwa Country Club on Oct. 6. The Warriors jumped over five teams they trailed at the midway point of the tourney, fashioning the second-best round of the 24-team field on the third day and tying for the second-best 18-hole score on the final day of the championship for a four-round score of 1197.

It was the second round of the tournament that severely hurt the Warriors' chances. Indian Hills shot a 309 on the second day and fell 24 strokes behind McLennan, the eventual team champ, then recovered nicely after that.

Sophomore Steven McGlynn led the IHCC effort at the national tourney, earning Honorable Mention All-American honors with a four-round total of 298, good for a tie for 13th place.
Another Indian Hills sophomore, Chris Dougill, put together a final-round score of four-under par 68, tying for the lowest score of the tourney. Dougill's last round vaulted him into a tie for 21st place with a 301 total.

The Warriors finished out of the top four teams only once in the 11 tournaments in which they competed in the fall and spring seasons. They won the team title in five tourneys including the Community 1st Credit Union Invitational they hosted. In that tournament, McGlynn shot a 63 in the opening round, one shot off the school record. He won six individual titles during his two years at IHCC, best in IHCC golf history.
