Monson, Warriors Second at Logan Invite

Marion, Ill. -- IHCC sophomore Luke Monson and the Indian Hills team were both second at this week's John A. Logan Fall Invitational, by almost identical margins.

Monson finished as the runnerup medalist, three shots behind Mississippi Gulf Coast's Hayes Weathersby; and the Warriors ended up four strokes in back of the host school for the team title.

Monson followed up a first-round one-over par 72 with a 75 to finish at 147.

Indian Hills trailed John A. Logan by four shots after the first day and the two longtime rivals shot matching 307s in the second round when the conditions were much tougher.

The Warriors had all six of their golfers finish in the top 13.  Sophomore Colin Pearson, who was the meet medalist in the season-opening Newman Fall Invitational, tied with teammate George Trujillo, a freshman, for 8th place.

A pair of freshmen, Greg Stanek and Jakob Garstecki, wound up in a 10th place tie, and frosh Harrison Moore tied for 13th.

Indian Hills will take part in the Eagle Golf Classic in Marion, Iowa on Oct. 6 and 7.

Warriors Ranked 7th

Ottumwa -- The Indian Hills golf team is No. 7 in the latest Golf World/Nike Golf NJCAA poll released this week.  The poll is conducted by the Golf Coaches Association of America.

The Warriors received 25 points in the rankings and moved up from their preseason No. 10 ranking, thanks to a second-place finish in their season-opening meet, the Newman Fall Invitational in Wichita, Kans., earlier this month where they competed with six four-year schools.

Central Alabama edged out Odessa (Tex.) for the top spot in the ratings with Wallace State (Ala.) third.

Pearson Leads IHCC to 2nd

Wichita, KS -- Led by medalist Colin Pearson, Indian Hills notched a second-place finish in the Warriors' first meet of the fall.  Pearson had the low individual score by one shot and IHCC wound up two strokes behind team champ Oklahoma Christian at the Newman Fall Invitational, played at the Reflection Ridge Country Club.

Pearson, a sophomore from Fort Dodge and the only one of the top six players back from last year's squad, had the low score in the field in the first round -- a four-under par 68.  He followed that up with a two-under 70 on Tuesday to finish one shot ahead of Dylan McClure of Cameron and James Bolton of Newman, the host school.

IHCC coach Mike Hagen has seven freshmen on his nine-man roster and four of them saw their first collegiate action in the meet.  The best performance from the frosh came from Jakob Garstecki who fired a three-under 69 in the second round and came in 5th.

Classmate Harrison Moore had a top-20 showing with a 152 total and a 17th-place finish.  The other sophomore on the roster, Luke Monson, was 20th.

Indian Hills had a three-stroke lead over Oklahoma Christian after the first round, but OCUwas five shots better than the Warriors over the second 18 holes and edged them, 582-584.

The Warriors head to Marion, Ill. for the John A. Logan Fall Invitational Sept. 22-23.

Hagen Announces Recruiting Class

OTTUMWA --- All five of the Indian Hills golfers who represented the college at the national tournament last month have graduated.  That requires coach Mike Hagen to replenish his roster for next year.  Hagen has announced a seven-player recruiting class that he is confident will keep the Warriors – national champions in 2011 and ’12 – in national title contention for the immediate future.
The class includes two Iowans, Isaac Vandersee from West Des Moines Valley and Harrison Moore from Cedar Rapids Kennedy.  Vandersee was a first-team all-state selection as a senior and the conference champion; Moore, a second-team all-stater, tied for sixth in the state tourney last fall for a Kennedy team that was runner-up at state in two of the last three years.
Two players from Wisconsin, Jakob Garstecki from Germantown and Josh Smith from Hazel Green, will be joining Indian Hills in the fall.  Garstecki is a two-time all-state selection and won the AJGA Midwest Junior Players Championship and the Wisconsin Junior Masters in 2012.  Smith was the medalist in the Wisconsin Division 3 State Championship.
Greg Stanek from Bellevue, Nebraska won all-state honors the past three years.  The future Warrior is the record-holder in the Omaha metro tourney and played for his home state in the Nebraska-Kansas Cup matches.
Two international players round out the IHCC recruits.  George Trujillo was the number-one ranked junior player in Venezuela multiple times over the last two years.  He won the Venezuelan National Junior Championship and the LaVitalicia International Amateur last year and placed fourth at this year’s South American Junior Amateur.
Sam Sloman will come to IHCC from Somerset, England where he qualified for the 2012 English Amateur and tied for seventh in the Scottish Youth tourney.  Sloman also won numerous junior events in South England.
Hagen says he’s ecstatic about the recruiting class and the future of the Indian Hills program.  “Although we will miss the guys who graduated, we can’t worry about what we’re losing,” the coach said.  “Our future looks bright and I’m excited to get to work with our incoming golfers.  They will be very important to our program.”
The seven newcomers will join Colin Pearson and Luke Monson, a pair of freshmen on last year’s IHCC squad.

White Wins Russell Award

OTTUMWA --- An Indian Hills Community College golfer has won a prestigious national award.  William White, who just completed his sophomore season at IHCC, is the winner of the 2013 Jimmy Russell Award, given to the golfer judged to be the NJCAA’s Student-Athlete of the Year.
This is the fourth year that the Russell Award has been presented and it goes to the outstanding sophomore NJCAA golfer who exemplifies academic excellence, good citizenship and outstanding play in men’s golf over the course of his career.
White, who has signed to attend Northern Illinois University, wrapped up his career at Indian Hills earlier this month with an 11th-place finish at the NJCAA National Tournament where he shot under-par rounds the last three days.  White had top-ten finishes in all four tourneys prior to the national meet, including a tie for medalist honors in the Augustana Invitational.  He was in the top-13 in nine of the ten meets he played his sophomore year.
“We were fortunate to have William represent Indian Hills golf in the classroom, in the community and on the golf course,” said IHCC coach Mike Hagen.  “He truly embodies what it means to be a student-athlete.”
The Jimmy Russell Award was created in honor of the Hall of Fame coach at Odessa College who was instrumental in starting the NJCAA National Golf Championship and won six national titles at Odessa.
One of White’s teammates at Indian Hills for the past two years, Ben Ludlam, will be heading to St. John’s University in New York in the fall after signing a letter-of-intent with the Storm.
Ludlam, like White, played on the Warriors’ 2012 national championship golf team.  He was given the Phil Mickelson Award as the top freshman golfer in the NJCAA after his first year at Indian Hills.
Ludlam and White will be joined in the Division I ranks next year by Indian Hills teammates Mitch Tucker and Connor Peck.  Tucker and Peck will play at University of Missouri-Kansas City and Kansas University, respectively.
“I’m excited for the next step in each of these young men’s golf careers,” Hagen said of his four golfers who will be moving on.  “While at Indian Hills, all four have worked extremely hard and represented our program in a very positive manner.”

Warriors, White Finish 11th at Nationals

Lubbock, TX -- Indian Hills' bid for a third straight national title came up short as the Warriors couldn't overcome a show start to the four-day NJCAA National Championship and finished in 11th place.

Indian Hills posted a team score of one over-par 289 in each of the last two rounds, but was done in by a 304 total in the opening round and a 296 the following day.  IHCC moved up the team leaderboard after finding themselves in 17th place midway through the tourney.

IHCC sophomore William White shot a two-under par 286 for the 72-hole event and wound up in a tie for 11th place,  mirroring his team's finish.  White's only round above par was the first one when he opened with a 74.  He followed with a 70 the next day and ended with back-to-back 71s, giving him three straight sub-par rounds to close out his two-year career.

Freshman Connor Peck was next for Indian Hills in a tie for 48th place with a  297 total.  After Peck came Ben Ludlam and Mitch Tucker, who, like White, were a part of the 2012 Indian Hills title team.  Ludlam fought back from a first-round 80 to tie for 54th place.  He got steadily better as the tourney went on, shooting 75, 73 and 70 over the final three days.

Tucker tied for 77th place; his best round of the event was an even-par 72 in the third round.

Rounding out the IHCC scoring was Kevin Workman, who also overcame a bad round -- a second round 86 -- to post rounds of 73 and 75 the last two days.

Central Alabama won the team title by one stroke over runnerup Odessa (TX).

The Warriors will lose all five of the golfers that coach Mike Hagen took to the national tourney.  The lone freshman in the group, Peck, has signed a letter-of-intent to attend Kansas University in the fall.  Tucker is headed to University of Missouri-Kansas City, White to Northern Illinois and Ludlam will go to St. John's in New York.

Workman, Warriors Finish Second at Districts

Newton, Kansas -- Indian Hills couldn't hold onto a slim one-stroke lead after the second round and finished second to Dodge City CC in the NJCAA District III Championship this week at the Sand Creek Station Golf Course.

The Warriors took the single-shot advantage over Dodge City into Tuesday's final round, but shot a team total of 317 over the last 18 holes and wound up four strokes out of first place.  Hutchinson CC was a distant third.

Indian Hills did have the lowest one-round team total, their 291 in the opening round.

IHCC sophomore Kevin Workman had a solid tournament and finished one shot away from medalist honors.  Workman fired a two-under par 70 in the opening round and followed with a 73 and a 78 to end up one shot behind medalist Mariano Rossi of Dodge City.

The Warriors had four other golfers finish in the top 10.  Connor Peck was 4th, Mitch Tucker 5th, Colin Pearson tied for 7th and William White tied for 9th place.

Next up for Indian Hills is the NJCAA Division I National Championship in Lubbock, Texas May 14-17.  The Warriors have won the national title each of the last two years and have to be considered one of the main contenders going into this year's meet.
