Ex-Warrior Ihm Shines for the Hawkeyes

Ottumwa -- Former Indian Hills golfer Steven Ihm, now a junior at the University of Iowa, had a good month in April, being named the Big Ten Golfer of the Week and earning medalist honors in back-to-back tournaments.

Ihm led Iowa to a team title at the Boilermaker Invitational by firing a 5-under par, 211, a performance that earned him the conference Golfer of the Week award.  He also shot a 5-under, 211, the previous week at the Hawkeye-Great River Entertainment Invitational winning medalist honors there as well.

Ihm was the first Hawkeye to win back-to-back medalist titles in 43 years.

In last weekend's Big Ten Championships, Ihm tied for 13th place.  He opened with a 1-under par, 71, and wound up the four-day tourney with 11 birdies and the second-best performance on the par-3 holes, playing them in two under par.  The Hawkeyes tied for third in the team standings.

Ihm has provided Iowa's top individual finish in 7-of-9 stroke play tournaments this season.  He has been in the top 16 in every tourney this spring and has four top 10 finishes this year.

The Peosta, Iowa, native was the highest ranked player in the Big Ten heading into last week's conference tourney, ranking 46th in the Golfstat Cup Standings.

Ihm played one season at Indian Hills and was instrumental in the Warriors winning the 2011 NJCAA Division I national championship.  He was given the Phil Mickelson Award as the top junior college golfer in the nation following his freshman season at IHCC.

Warriors Enjoy Dominating Performance

Newton, Kansas -- Sophomore Mitch Tucker led a quintet of Indian Hills golfers with even-par or below-par rounds in what turned out to be the final 18 holes of the tourney as IHCC won the rain-shortened Iowa/Kansas Clash at the Sand Creek Station Golf Course.  The scheduled third round was canceled because of winter-like weather on Tuesday.

Playing on the course where they won their second straight Division I national title last spring, Indian Hills took a one-shot lead after the opening round on Monday and then blew away the field with a 275, its lowest team score of the season, in the second 18 holes.  The Warriors bested runnerup Iowa Western by 19 shots.

Tucker, who was the meet medalist, had a four-under par 68 in the day's second round to claim the individual title by one stroke with a 139 total.  But Tucker was upstaged a bit by teammate William White, who had the low  round of the tourney -- a sizzling six-under 66 in round two.

Both Ben Ludlam and Kevin Workman followed up opening-round 69s with even-par 72s and gave the Warriors a four-way tie for 4th place with White and Connor Peck, who shot a three-under 69 after a 72 in the first round.  IHCC had five of the top seven scores in the tourney.

Indian Hills returns to the Sand Creek Station course Apr. 29-30 for the District III Championship where they will face virtually the same field as the one in the Iowa/Kansas Clash.

Tucker, White Sign DI Letters

OTTUMWA --- Two sophomore members of last year’s national championship Indian Hills Community College golf team signed letters-of-intent this week with NCAA Division I schools.
Mitch Tucker from Oskaloosa signed with University of Missouri-Kansas City and William White, who is from Waukegan, Ill., will continue his education and golf career close to home at Northern Illinois University.
Tucker has finished in the top eight in all three tourneys the Warriors have played in this spring.  His best performance was a tie for third at the Beu/Mussatto.  He was eighth and tied for eighth in the other two meets.
His freshman campaign saw Tucker with five top-five finishes, including three meets where he was second.
Tucker was one of three golfers representing NJCAA schools to be invited to play in the prestigious World University Golf Championship in Liberec, Czech Republic last June.
White is coming off his best tourney as a Warrior, tying for medalist honors at the Augustana Invitational this month.  He tied for eighth in the previous meet.
A runnerup finish at the District Championship last spring, when he shot a 68 in the opening round, was his best result as a freshman and came after he was third at the Iowa/Kansas Clash.
“I’m excited and proud of what Mitch and William have accomplished during their Indian Hills career,” IHCC coach Mike Hagen said.  “They both worked hard on their games.  I’m happy both of them found an institution and golf program that meets their needs.”
Indian Hills is still ranked third in the latest Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches Poll.  The Warriors will take part in the Iowa/Kansas Clash in Newton, Kansas next week.

Tucker, White Lead IHCC to 3rd-Place Finish

Macomb, Ill. -- Solid performances by sophomores Mitch Tucker and William White helped Indian Hills to a third-place finish in the Beu/Mussatto Invitational.

The Warriors used a terrific second round when all six IHCC golfers shot 73 or better to move into place for a possible team title, but dropped two shots to eventual champion South Dakota State in the final round and wound up four strokes in back of SDSU.  IUPUI was second, two shots ahead of the Warriors.

Tucker had a consistent showing in which he fired rounds of 74, 73 and even-par 72 to finish in a tie for third place, two shots behind individual champ Santiago Ruiz of IUPUI.  White used a one-under 71 in the second round to end up in a tie for eighth, one stroke behind his teammate, Tucker, and three out of first.

Connor Peck and Kevin Workman gave IHCC two other players in the top 17 -- Peck finishing alone in 16th place and Workman tied for 17th.  Both had even-par 72s in the middle round.

Indian Hills was the lone two-year school in the 14-team field in an event they won last year on the way to the Warriors' second consecutive national title.
