Monson, Warriors Second at Logan Invite

Marion, Ill. -- IHCC sophomore Luke Monson and the Indian Hills team were both second at this week's John A. Logan Fall Invitational, by almost identical margins.

Monson finished as the runnerup medalist, three shots behind Mississippi Gulf Coast's Hayes Weathersby; and the Warriors ended up four strokes in back of the host school for the team title.

Monson followed up a first-round one-over par 72 with a 75 to finish at 147.

Indian Hills trailed John A. Logan by four shots after the first day and the two longtime rivals shot matching 307s in the second round when the conditions were much tougher.

The Warriors had all six of their golfers finish in the top 13.  Sophomore Colin Pearson, who was the meet medalist in the season-opening Newman Fall Invitational, tied with teammate George Trujillo, a freshman, for 8th place.

A pair of freshmen, Greg Stanek and Jakob Garstecki, wound up in a 10th place tie, and frosh Harrison Moore tied for 13th.

Indian Hills will take part in the Eagle Golf Classic in Marion, Iowa on Oct. 6 and 7.

Warriors Ranked 7th

Ottumwa -- The Indian Hills golf team is No. 7 in the latest Golf World/Nike Golf NJCAA poll released this week.  The poll is conducted by the Golf Coaches Association of America.

The Warriors received 25 points in the rankings and moved up from their preseason No. 10 ranking, thanks to a second-place finish in their season-opening meet, the Newman Fall Invitational in Wichita, Kans., earlier this month where they competed with six four-year schools.

Central Alabama edged out Odessa (Tex.) for the top spot in the ratings with Wallace State (Ala.) third.

Pearson Leads IHCC to 2nd

Wichita, KS -- Led by medalist Colin Pearson, Indian Hills notched a second-place finish in the Warriors' first meet of the fall.  Pearson had the low individual score by one shot and IHCC wound up two strokes behind team champ Oklahoma Christian at the Newman Fall Invitational, played at the Reflection Ridge Country Club.

Pearson, a sophomore from Fort Dodge and the only one of the top six players back from last year's squad, had the low score in the field in the first round -- a four-under par 68.  He followed that up with a two-under 70 on Tuesday to finish one shot ahead of Dylan McClure of Cameron and James Bolton of Newman, the host school.

IHCC coach Mike Hagen has seven freshmen on his nine-man roster and four of them saw their first collegiate action in the meet.  The best performance from the frosh came from Jakob Garstecki who fired a three-under 69 in the second round and came in 5th.

Classmate Harrison Moore had a top-20 showing with a 152 total and a 17th-place finish.  The other sophomore on the roster, Luke Monson, was 20th.

Indian Hills had a three-stroke lead over Oklahoma Christian after the first round, but OCUwas five shots better than the Warriors over the second 18 holes and edged them, 582-584.

The Warriors head to Marion, Ill. for the John A. Logan Fall Invitational Sept. 22-23.
