Peck Headed to Kansas

Ottumwa -- Indian Hills Community College golfer Connor Peck has signed a letter-of-intent to attend Kansas University next year.  Peck, an IHCC freshman from Ankeny, reportedly had scholarship offers from both Kansas and Iowa.

After Indian Hills’ 2013 spring season, Peck will have three years of eligibility remaining.
Peck enjoyed a strong fall season in his introduction to collegiate golf.  He finished in the top 18 in all four meets in which the Warriors competed.  He fired a 64 in his first round of the fall, in the Wichita Diet Pepsi Shocker Invitational, and went on to finish in a tie for seventh place.
Peck’s best finish came in the Community 1st Credit Union Invitational, hosted by Indian Hills at the Ottumwa Country Club, where he was the runner-up after a final-round 67.
Earning first-team all-state honors as a junior and senior at Ankeny High School, Peck was the recipient of the Herman Sani Scholarship from the Iowa Golf Association.

Warriors are 4th at National Preview

Lubbock, Tex. -- Indian Hills found out something the Warriors probably already knew heading into this week's NJCAA Division I National Championship Preview -- three Texas schools and two from Kansas will provide strong opposition next spring as the Warriors seek to make it three straight national titles.

IHCC and those five other schools finished in the top six spots in the Preview over the same Rawls Course where the national title will be determined next May.

Odessa (TX) CC won the team title by one stroke over McLennan CC, also from Texas, and Odessa's Micah Rodgers was the meet medalist, firing a six-under par 210 over three rounds on the par-72 course.

Indian Hills was fourth, 23 shots behind Odessa.  IHCC had one of the better second rounds with a 293 total but the Warriors were done in by an opening round 298 total and a 302 over the final 18 holes, a total that was 13 strokes behind Odessa.

The Warriors were paced by William White, one of the returners off last year's national title team.  White finished in a tie for 10th place after firing rounds of 73, 71 and 75.  His second-round one-under par 71 was the same as teammate Ben Ludlam and those were the only under-par rounds of the tourney for Indian Hills.

Colin Pearson had a strong tournament for IHCC, finishing with rounds of 73 and 72, good for a tie for 12th place.  Connor Peck had the next-best score, a 223 and a tie for 18th.

In four meets this fall, Indian Hills finished first, second, third and fourth once each.

Sharpe, Ludlam Lead IHCC to 2nd-Place Finish

Chicago, Ill. -- Freshman Oscar Sharpe was the medalist, one shot ahead of teammate Ben Ludlam, as Indian Hills took second place in the Courgar Classic, hosted by Chicago State.

Sharpe grabbed a one-stroke lead over Ludlam after firing a three-under par 69 in the opening round.  Both IHCC golfers came in at one-over 73 on Tuesday with Sharpe holding off Ludlam for the individual title.

Team champ Wisconsin-Green Bay held a four-stroke advantage over Indian Hills after the first round and maintained that lead on the second day when both schools recorded a 300 score.  Sharpe was playing as an individual so his second-round 73 didn't count toward IHCC's team score.

Warrior sophomores William White and Mitch Tucker tied for 13th place with 150 totals.

Indian Hills edged Valparaiso Gold by one stroke to claim second place.  The Warriors trailed Valpo by eight shots after the first round.

The Warriors go to Lubbock, Texas next week for the NJCAA Division I National Championship Preview.

IHCC Overcomes Slow Start to Win Own Invite

Ottumwa -- The Indian Hills golf team found intself in a strange place after the first round of its own Community 1st Credit Union Invitational.  The Warriors, who have never lost this event, were seven shots behind Iowa Western after the opening 18 holes.  And they trailed Johnson County by three strokes.

But after two more rounds, the Warriors had regained their touch and had a convincing victory.  They ended up 13 shots ahead of Iowa Western and a whopping 37 in front of Johnson County.

Conner Peck, an IHCC freshman, followed up an impressive performance in his first meet earlier in the month another strong showing.  Peck narrowly lost the battle for the individual title to Iowa Western's Jimmy Jaskoske by one stroke.  Each player turned in a five-under score of 67 for the final round, which was also the low round for the tourney.

Indian Hills had four of the top seven scores and seven of the top 17.

IHCC's Mitch Tucker, William White and Colin Pearson all finished in the top seven.

Tucker and White both had one under-par round on the way to scores of 219 and 220, respectively.  Pearson was another three shots back.

Indian Hills now has nearly a month off before returning to action in the Cougar Golf Classic in Chicago Oct. 15-16.

Freshman Peck Paces IHCC in Kansas

Wichita, KS -- Indian Hills freshman Conner Peck made quite a splash in his first round as a collegian and the Warriors went on to finish 3rd in the eight-team Diet Pepsi Shocker Invitational.

Peck had the low round of the tourney, a sparkling seven-under par 64 in the first round.  And even after slipping to a 76 in the 3rd round, he still wound up tied for 7th in his first meet as a Warrior.  His 211 score was one stroke better than IHCC's William White, who likewise had his problems in the 3rd round.

White fired a three-under 68 in the opening round and followed that up with a 65 in the 2nd round before settling for a final-round 79 and a 212 total.

Ben Ludlam and Mitch Tucker, two of the prominent members of last spring's IHCC national tournament championship team, had solid starts to their sophomore campaigns.

Ludlam, the Phil Mickelson Award winner as a frosh, had an even-par 71 and a one-under 70 on his way to a 216 total and a tie for 25th.  Tucker had rounds of 72 and 69 and tied for 27th at 217.

Indian Hills actually led the field, made up of seven four-year schools and the Warriors, after the first round when IHCC, spurred by Peck's round of 64, had a two-shot lead over Wichita State.  The Warriors were still only five strokes behind the host Shockers after round two, but Wichita State ran away with the team title in the final round.

The Warriors ended up 22 shots behind WSU, but only six in back of runnerup Kansas State.

IHCC Golfers Top National Poll

Ottumwa -- The two-time defending national champion Indian Hills Community College golf team will start the 2012 fall campaign as the top-ranked team in the nation. The Warriors received seven of nine first-place votes in the Golf World/Nike Golf NJCAA Division I preseason poll conducted by the Golf Coaches Association of America.

“It’s great to see us on top of this year’s first poll,” said IHCC coach Mike Hagen. “But the ranking doesn’t mean we have done anything as a team. It does, however, recognize our returning sophomores and strong freshman recruiting class.”

The two teams that finished a distant second and third to the Warriors in last May’s national tourney are ranked in the top three. Odessa (TX) is second in the poll and Western Texas is third. Western Texas was the runner-up in the national tourney, 13 strokes in back of IHCC, and Odessa was third, 24 shots behind the Warriors.

Hagen welcomes back three members of last year’s national title team in Ben Ludlam, the Phil Mickelson Award winner as the best freshman in NJCAA Division I, Mitch Tucker and William White. Also returning is Kevin Workman, who showed signs of being a solid contributor during his freshman season.

The IHCC coach said, “I am excited to see how our returners play coming off of last year’s national championship. And I’m anxious to find out this fall how our freshmen adapt to the pressure of college golf.”

The freshmen class includes Oscar Sharpe, a highly-touted player from England, as well as Iowans Colin Pearson from Fort Dodge, Connor Peck from Ankeny and Luke Monson from Clear Lake.

The Warriors open their four-meet fall schedule when they play in the Diet Pepsi Shocker Classic in Wichita, Kan. Sept. 10-11. They will host the Community 1st Credit Union Fall Invitational Sept. 18-19.

Post-Tourney Honors for Hagen, Blampied and Ludlam

Ottumwa -- OTTUMWA --- Indian Hills Community College golf coach Mike Hagen and two of his golfers have picked up some awards in the wake of the Warriors’ second consecutive national championship.

Hagen was named the NJCAA Coach of the Year and was also selected as the Dave Williams Coach of the Year, an award sponsored by Eaton and Golf Pride. It’s the second year in a row the IHCC coach has garnered both accolades.

Sophomore Jon Paul Blampied, by virtue of his second-place finish in the national tourney, was named a NJCAA 1st-team All-American and a member of the NJCAA All-Tournament 1st team.

Freshman Ben Ludlam was a second-team selection for both of the NJCAA’s honor squads after a 6th-place finish at the national meet. Ludlam also took home the Phil Mickelson Award, given to the top freshman in the nation.

Back-To-Back National Titles for IHCC!

Newton, KS -- The Indian Hills Warriors left no doubt as to who was the best Division I golf team in the country in the 2012 National Championship this week.  The Warriors took an eight-shot lead into the final round on Friday, doubled that advantage midway through the round, and wound up with a 13-shot margin for the school's second straight DI national title.

Western Texas started the final round in second place and never did push the Warriors, finishing well off the pace in the runnerup spot.  Odessa College was another eight strokes behind in 3rd place, a whopping 21 shots in back of Indian Hills.

IHCC sophomore Jon Paul Blampied just missed a piece of the individual title as his final-round 71 left him one shot behind Meridian's Jake Stirling.  Those two had the only under-par rounds of the day and Blampied was unable to make up the one-shot lead Stirling had going into the final 18 holes.  Blampied, the only player back from last year's IHCC championship team, finished one stroke under par for the torney with a 287 total.

Indian Hills quickly put to rest any hopes their pursuers may have had that the lead the Warriors started the day with would vanish when they played the first six holes in four-over par.  That allowed them to increase the lead they began the day with, and they continued to build on the lead by compiling a team score of five-over on the next six holes.

The conditions on Friday were the toughest they were during the four-day tourney with 45-mile-an-hour winds.  But the Warriors were unfazed in notching the third national golf title in IHCC history, the last two Division I crowns.

After struggling through the first two rounds, IHCC soph Monty Lack came through over the second half of the tourney.  He followed a second-round 82 with back-to-back 73s and wound up tied for 24th place.

Ben Ludlam, who started his week by accepting the Phil Mickelson Award given to the nation's best freshman junior college golfer, ended in a tie for 6th place with a 296 total.

Indian Hills was expected to be in the hunt for the national title when the week began, and coach Mike Hagen said his squad embraced the challenge.  "Everyone expected us to be right in there going in," said Hagen.  "About five or six teams had a shot to win it.  The difference is we believed we could do it."

Indian Hills' triumph in the national tournament extended a tremendous stretch they put together in the spring season.  The Warriors won their final five meets of the spring.  They won seven  invitationals in all, including the fall campaign, and were first or second in nine of the 12 meets in which they played in the two seasons.

Warriors Increase Lead With One Round Left in National Tourney

Newton, KS -- A solid third round has the Indian Hills golf team poised to repeat as NJCAA Division I national champions.  The Warriors -- with a 882 total --  will take an eight-shot lead into Friday's final round after posting a 296 score Thursday.

Sophomores Jon Paul Blampied and Monty Lack led the way for IHCC with one-over par 73s.  Blampied is at even-par for the tourney and is locked in a three-way tie for fourth place.  Lack's round represented a nine-stroke improvement over his round the previous day.

Western Texas CC is in second place, eight shots behind Indian Hills and Meridian CC is two strokes behind the Texans.  WTCC started the day just one shot off the lead and stayed in second place despite a round of 303.

"We're not going to worry about Western Texas," said IHCC coach Mike Hagen, "and we're not going to worry about Meridian.  The only thing we're focused on is  Indian Hills."

The team that really hurts its tital chances in the 3rd round was Midland (TX) College.  They began the round just two shots in back of IHCC, but skied to a 315 total, putting them 21 strokes behind the Warriors.

Indian Hills freshman Ben Ludlam is looking for a good closing round to stay in the hunt for the individual medalist title.  He fired a 75 in the 3rd round and is tied for 8th-place at 218.  Teammate William White carded his third straight 75 and is tied for 24th.

The individual race is tight with the top 10 players all within five strokes of each other.

The Warriors will tee off at 12:45 Friday afternoon.

Warriors With a One-Stroke Lead Midway Through National Tourney

Newton, KS -- Indian Hills broke away from a three-way tie for first after the opening day of the NJCAA Division I National Golf Championship to take a one-stroke lead at the halfway mark of the tourney.  The Warriors finished strong over the final few holes to grab the lead over Western Texas CC.

Indian Hills' second-round score of 294 was two shots higher than the day before.

The top six teams after two days are separated by just five strokes.  The team that made the biggest move on Wednesday was Central Alabama, the team the Warriors defeated for the title last year.  They cut 20 strokes off their first-round score and had the best round of the day with a 285 that pushed them into 5th place.

Midland is two shots back of IHCC in 3rd place, one shot ahead of Odessa and two better than Central Alabama.

Indian Hills has two golfers in contention for the individual title.  Sophomore Jon Paul Blampied and freshman Ben Ludlam are in a six-way tie for 4th place with 143 totals.

Blampied led the field after the opening round with a 67, but struggled a little in the second round and ended it with a 76.

Ludlam followed his first-round 73 with a two-under par 70 to jump from a tie for 18th place into the logjam in 4th place.

Mitch Tucker aided the Warriors' cause with a one-over par 73, four shots better than his first round.  And William White matched his score from Tuesday with another 75.  Tucker and White are among six players at 150.

Ludlam Wins Mickelson Award

Newton, KS -- Indian Hills freshman Ben Ludlam has been named the winner of the Phil Mickelson Award presented by the Phil and Amy Mickelson Foundation as the most outstanding freshman in NJCAA Division I men's golf.

Ludlam recently won the NJCAA Division I District III Championship with a four-under par 212.  It was his fourth straight top-seven finish in the spring season.

Last fall, Ludlam won both the John A. Logan Invitational and Blue Devil Classic.  For the fall and spring seasons combined he has had five top-five finishes and two other top-10s.

It's the second straight year that Indian Hills has had the Phil Mickelson Award winner.  Steven Ihm won the honor last year.  Ihm, now a sophomore playing at the University of Iowa, was recently named to the All-Big Ten second team.

Ludlam was also named to the five-player NJCAA Division I PING All-America first team.  He is also one of four Indian Hills golfers on the PING All-District III team, joined on that squad by teammates Monty Lack, Mitch Tucker and William White.

Blampied and Warriors On Top After 1st Round

Newton, KS -- Sophomore Jon Paul Blampied's five-under par 67 helped Indian Hills to a three-way tie for first place after the opening round of the NJCAA Division I golf tournament on Tuesday.  The Warriors' team score of 292 -- four over par -- tied Western Texas CC and Midland CC atop the leaderboard after 18 holes.

Blampied, who helped lead IHCC to the team title a year ago, has a two-shot lead over Landon Garrett of Tri-County CC in the battle for individual medalist.

Indian Hills' Ben Ludlam, who on Monday was named the winner of Phil Mickelson Award, was in a tie for 18th place with the next-best round for the Warriors -- a one-over par 73.

William White shot a 75 for IHCC and Monty Lack and Mitch Tucker are in a large group of players who shot 77s for the first round of the tourney.

Tri-County is 4th in the team standings, four shots behind the leaders, and Odessa is 5th.

Indian Hills won both the Iowa-Kansas Clash and NJCAA District tournament on the same Sand Creek Station course where this competition is being held in their final two tuneup meets before the national tourney.

Ludlam is Medalist as Warriors Roll to Another Win

Newton, KS -- The Indian Hills golf team apparently feels very comfortable at the Sand Creek Station Course and that could bode well for the Warriors' chances of defending their Division I national championship.

Less than a week after Indian Hills won the Iowa-Kansas Clash at Sand Creek, the Warriors dominated the field in romping to an easy win in the NJCAA District III Championship at the course.  And since the National Tournament will be played there as well, the Warriors should have no shortage of confidence when the national tourney commences on May 15.

Indian Hills had posted a 10-stroke victory over Dodge City CC in the Iowa-Kansas Clash.  They more than quadrupled that margin in the district meet, beating Dodge City by 41 shots.

A superb opening 18 holes got the Warriors off to a fast start when they shot a 279, 15 shots better than the rest of the field.  IHCC followed that up with rounds of 286 and 298 as they continued to pull away for their fourth straight team title of the spring.

Ben Ludlam led a trio of Indian Hills golfers at the top of the leaderboard, winning medalist honors with a 212.  Ludlam had three consecutive sup-par rounds, shooting an opening-round 70 and following it up with back-to-back 71s.

IHCC's William White and Monty Lack followed Ludlam and both sizzled over the first 18 holes -- White firing a 68 and Lack a 69.

Mitch Tucker joined his teammates in the top six with a 6th place finish.  Kevin Workman, playing as an individual, actually had the fourth-best Indian Hills score, a 222 good for 4th place.

Indian Hills will take the next two weeks to prepare for its shot at winning a second straight national title.

Coach Mike Hagen said after the District tourney win, "We're going to enjoy this for now.  It'll probably really hit us more next week when we get back into our regular routine to prepare for defending our national championship.  I was really excited to see us perform like this in the postseason."

Solid Second Round Leads to Another Title

Newton, KS -- When the Indian Hill golf team returns to the Sand Creek Station Course for its next two meets -- the District and National Tournament events -- it will do so with confidence.  It's a confidence gained from a 10-shot victory in the Iowa-Kansas Clash where the Warriors built a sizeable lead after the second round and coasted to their third straight team title.

The Warriors defeated Dodge City by ten strokes and the big reason was a second 18 holes in which IHCC shot a 290, 17 strokes better than Dodge City.  The two teams each shot an opening-round 288.

Dodge City had the top two individual scores, but Indian Hills had the next five finishers.  All five Warriors shot between 71 and 73 in the opening round -- a one-under par 71 by Monty Lack, even-par 72s by William White, Jon Paul Blampied and Mitch Tucker and a 73 by Ben Ludlam.

Lack followed with another 71 in round two with Tucker shooting a 72.  White had the low round in the final 18 holes with a three-under par 69.

The district tournament at the same Sand Creek Station course begins this Sunday with play wrapping up the following day. The national tourney, also at Sand Creek Station, will be played May 14-18.

Big Second Day Allows IHCC to Take William Jewell Invite

Liberty, Mo. -- Unfazed by a one-stroke deficit after the first day of play, Indian Hills posted a score that was 11 strokes better than runnerup Bethany College over the second 18 holes to win their second straight tourney on Friday.

The Warriors won the team title at the William Jewell Spring Invite by 10 shots over Bethany and IHCC had all seven of its golfers in the top 17.

Warriors Run Away From the Field in Illinois

Macomb, Ill. -- The Indian Hills Warriors used an impressive final 18 holes to crush the field in the Beu/Mussatto Invitational hosted by Western Illinois University.

Five IHCC golfers had sub-par totals in the final round as the Warriors blew away the other 13 teams -- all four-year schools -- to post their biggest win so far this spring.

Indian Hills trailed Western Illinois by five shots after the opening round, but took control with a 292 score in the second round, moving six strokes ahead of WIU, their closest competitor.

But the Warriors were just getting warmed up. They shot a 279 in the final round, 12 strokes better than the next-lowest score for the tourney as they wound up winning by a whopping 18 shots.

In an amazing show of strength, IHCC's Kevin Workman, Mitch Tucker, Ben Ludlam, William White and Jon Paul Blampied all came in under-par for the final 18 holes. Workman and Ludlam both fired four-under par 68s, White carded a 69 and Tucker and Blampied each tallied a one-under 71.

Monty Lack, who had his own 68 in the second round, posted a two-over par 74 for the Warriors.

Workman, who was competing as an individual, tied for second place with Indiana's Nicholas Grubnich at three-under par 213. The Hoosiers' Michael McGee was the medalist with a 212.

Tucker tied for 5th, Ludlam was 7th and White tied for 8th for IHCC.

Lack and Blampied both recovered nicely after opening-round 79s. Lack came right back for his 68 in Monday's second round. Blampied shaved four strokes off his score in each of the next two rounds.

Indian Hills will next be in action in the William Jewell Spring Invitational in Liberty, Missouri Apr. 12-13.

Warriors Fail to Hold Lead, Finish 2nd in Illinois

Marion, Ill. -- Indian Hills was unable to hold onto an eight-stroke lead they had after the opening round and saw tournament host John A. Logan come back and defeat IHCC by three shots at the Kokopelli Golf Course on Monday.

"When you have an eight-stroke lead going into the final round, you expect to win," said IHCC coach Mike Hagen. "We're a young team, and unfortunately we're playing young. We just need to get back at it and continue to get better."

John A. Logan fired a second-round 282 to overtake Indian Hills after the Warriors had posted a 290 total for the first round. Indian Hills was only four shots higher with their Monday score, but they couldn't hold off John A. Logan.

Sophomore Monty Lack lost a playoff with JAL's Bryce Doughty for medalist honors. Lack followed an opening-round one-under par 70 with an even-par 71 for a 141 total.

Teammate Jon Paul Blampied had back-to-back rounds of 72 to finish in 3rd place.

Indian Hills had four others in the top 10. William White and Ben Ludlam tied for 5th and Kieran Goodall and Mitch Tucker tied for 8th.

The Warriors will return to action in the Beu/Mussato Invitational in Macomb, Ill. April 2-3.

Warriors are 6th in Return to Texas

Westworth Village, TX -- Indian Hills sophomore Monty Lack took a run at the individual title as the Warriors finished 6th in the UST Mamiya Texas Intercollegiate.

It was the second straight tourney in Texas to open the season for the Warriors and their showing was encouraging to coach Mike Hagen.

"I felt really good about the way we ended up," said Hagen. "Those are the best numbers we've ever put up at this tournament since I've been at Indian Hills. We played right with some really good teams throughout the two days."

In fact, Indian Hills was the only two-year school in the 16-team field.

Lack had a strong performance to lead the Warriors, firing back-to-back two-under par 70s. He was just two shots back of medalist Johan Anderson of Southern Nazarene.

Freshman Mitch Tucker also played well for IHCC, with rounds of 73 and 71, good for a tie for 16th. Also at 144 was Kevin Workman who had a one-under round of 71 on Sunday. Indian Hills soph Jon Paul Blampied had a 71 in the opening round, but struggled a little on the second day and wound up in a tie for 33rd place after a 77.

Oklahoma Christian won a playoff with Oklahoma City for the team title.

Indian Hills is idle until going to the John A. Logan Spring Invitational March 25-26.

3rd Place Finish for IHCC in Texas

Bullard, TX -- The Indian Hills golf team opened its spring season with a third-place finish at the Tyler JC Spring Invitational. Texarkana CC won the meet by 18 strokes over runnerup Tyler, which edged out the Warriors by two shots.

Indian Hills trailed the co-leaders, Texarkana and Tyler, by only four strokes after the first day, but, according to IHCC coach Mike Hagen, his squad struggled with some difficult pin placements in the second round. "Short-game wise, we have a lot to work on," said Hagen, "but those are things we can work on and improve."

IHCC sophomore Jon Paul Blampied was in contention for the individual title until a second-round 77 put him in 4th place. Blampied had an opening-round 74, the second-best score for the first 18 holes.

The Warriors had one other top-ten finish -- freshman William White was 8th with a pair of 78s.

Indian Hills will venture back into Texas for their next meet, the UST Mamiya Texas Intercollegiate Mar. 11-12.

"It's going to be a heck of a field," said Hagen. "Top NAIA teams and junior college programs will be there. We'll have to put in some work and see where we stand."

Hagen and Tucker to Represent NJCAA in World Event

OTTUMWA --- Indian Hills Community College golf coach Mike Hagen and one of his players, Mitch Tucker, have been selected to take part in a prestigious international competition this summer.

Hagen will be one of two coaches and Tucker, from Oskaloosa, one of six players who will go to Liberec, Czech Republic in June for the World University Golf Championship.

Hagen and David Lynn, coach at Oklahoma Christian University, will lead the U.S. team in the World University Championships which take place every two years.

Tucker will be one of three players representing NJCAA schools in the competition that will feature players from all over the world.

Hagen is in his seventh season as golf coach at Indian Hills. He led the Warriors to the Division I national title last spring.

Tucker was ranked No. 1 in the final Class 3A individual rankings as a senior at Oskaloosa High School. He tied for the runner-up spot in the state tournament to cap his high school career.

This past fall, in his introduction to collegiate golf, Tucker had three top-three finishes for Indian Hills. He was third in the Warriors’ opening meet of the fall and came in second in the next two meets. The IHCC freshman was 23rd in the NJCAA National Preview meet to close the fall campaign.

The World Golf Championship will be held from July 4-7 in the Czech Republic.
