Ludlam is Medalist as Warriors Finish 2nd in Illinois

Marion, Ill. -- John A. Logan defeated Indian Hills by six strokes as the two defending junior college national champions squared off at the John A. Logan Invitational at the Kokopeli Golf Course on Monday.

The Volunteers, the NJCAA Division II champ last spring, won the rain-shortened meet with a score of 432. The Warriors, who won the Division I crown in May, faltered over the final nine holes after the two teams were tied through the first 18 holes.

Indian Hills is counting on some talented freshmen to help the Warriors make a run at defending their title this year and two of them came through very nicely in IHCC's first meet of the fall season.

Ben Ludlam was the meet medalist with a score of 103 for 27 holes. Mitch Tucker was third as the IHCC frosh finished two shots back of Ludlam. The two returning players from a year ago were next for Indian Hills. John Paul Blampied had a 113 and Monty Lack a 116.

The Warriors head to Lake Panorama for the AIB Classic this Friday and Saturday.

Golfers Garner No. 1 National Ranking

OTTUMWA --- Defending national champion Indian Hills is ranked No. 1 in the nation in the golf preseason coaches’ poll. The Warriors became the first “northern” school to win the national golf title last spring when they defeated Central Alabama by four strokes in the four-day national tourney in Odessa, Texas.

Indian Hills edged Brevard (FL) CC by one point in the preseason poll, officially called the Golf World/Nike Golf NJCAA DI College Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The poll is a combined effort of Golf World magazine, Nike Golf and the Golf Coaches Association of America. The Warriors received three first-place votes to two each for Brevard and Central Alabama, who was third in the poll.

IHCC coach Mike Hagen admits the top ranking surprised him a little. “We lost Dan Dawson, Steven Ihm and Zach Steffen from our national championship team,” noted Hagen. “The voters must have felt that Jon Paul Blampied, who was our third scorer at the national tourney, and Monty Lack, our other returning sophomore, will be able to lead what we believe is a talented group of freshmen into the new season.”

“I’m excited to see how our young team responds,” added Hagen, who is beginning his seventh year as golf coach at Indian Hills.

The Warriors will open their fall schedule at the John A. Logan Invitational in Marion, Ill. September 25-26. They will play in five meets this fall, including the NJCAA National Preview in Newton, Kan. Oct. 15-18.

Indian Hills won all five meets in which it played last fall and 11 of 13 meets in the fall and spring combined.
